    Andrew Joseph Russell was a photographer for the Army at Petersburg. He was born in Walpole, New Hampshire, March 20, 1829, and raised in upstate New York. He trained as a portrait artist and attained some local recognition painting political portraits and landscapes. Before the war, he opened an art studio in New York City and painted stage sets.

    In 1865 Russell became the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. With an artist’s eye, he often selected views that juxtaposed monumental geological elements to manmade structures such as railroad and telegraph poles. Men and women appear in Russell’s pictures, although they are often dwarfed by the vast landscape.
