The Yashica 635 has an 80 mm f/3.5 Yashikor lens although later models had a higher quality Yashinon lens, a Copal MVX shutter, and originally came with a 35 mm adapter kit so you could shoot either 120mm or 35mm …

When I sent the Yashica 635 to him I included a shutter and lenses from a Mat 124G parts camera. He installed the Yashinon in favor of the original Yashikor lenses. Now it shoots as good as it looks. A hand held meter is needed due to the fact the camera has no meter.

Yashica 635 by Kar Yan Mak In 1958, Yashica manufactured a one and only dual format TLR, the Yashica 635. It takes 6x6 on 120 rollfilm and 24x36mm on 35mm film (with a special adapter kit). It has a Copal MVX shutter and a Yashikor 80mm f/3.5 lens. The 635 looks similar to the Yashica D, except for the additional knobs for 35mm film operation.

The 635 was a significant export model for Yashica and continued to be produced until the early 1970’s. The lens on the camera is a Yashikor 1:3,5 f=80mm with a Copal MXV shutter allowing shutter speeds of 1-1/500. Exposure can be set from f/3.5 to f/22. A roll of 120 film will give you 12 exposures on the 635.

The Yashica-635 is a roll film TLR introduced in 1958. With an extra kit you could use it with 35mm film. I don’t have that kit. The 635 is fitted with a 3.5/80mm Yashikor triplet lens which is supposed to be inferior to the Tessar-like Yashinon. Still I find it to be an excellent lens. The camera is a bit heavy, but everything works.

The “635” loads 120 film like most TLRs by lining up arrows on the film backing with the camera arrows. Controls for using 120 film are all on the right side. Knob film advance is initiated by pushing the film release button. It is simple and very reliable whereas the 124 Mat has some history of problems with the crank advance.

Having tried it out on the 635, I can say that yes, it can be made to work, but not nearly as easily as you might think. And, yes, using a TLR sideways is possible, and not especially awkward, although finding level is even harder than vertically. Here are a couple of vertical images using some very old, very expired Kodak color film.
