- August Sander was born in 1876 in a farming and mining community east of Cologne. His father was a mine carpenter and August’s first connection with photography was at the local mine helping carry photography apparatus belonging to the mine. With money from his uncle, he bought a camera and set up his own darkroom.

- During his military service in 1897 through 1899, Sander worked as a photographer’s assistant and as a photographer taking identification pictures.
