    Tens of thousands of photo-maps were produced during the war. During the Battle of the Somme, some 19,000 aerial photos of German positions were taken, and 430,000 prints were made. In the course of 1918, over 10 million aerial photographs were delivered to the armies in Belgium and France.

The Cartographic Branch holds World War II aerial images covering parts of the European, Mediterranean, and Pacific Theaters of Operation, taken by units of the U.S. and Allied Air Forces.

    The Map Location Diagram (right) shows the relative position of places within the area of this grid square. Maps having this Map Reference Number will cover the whole area but be less detailed. Maps with NE, NW, SE or SW in the Map Reference Number will only cover one-quarter of the whole area but be more detailed.
