DX or FX for Sports and Wildlife Photography

It seems like the debate of DX vs FX for wildlife and sports photography is a never ending one. DX shooters argue that they get more reach, stating that DX is like a “built-in 1.5x teleconverter”, or that DX setups are lighter due to smaller lenses and less expensive, or that DX chops off the corners of lenses, thus reducing vignetting and other optical issues. On the …

This is really what is at issue when people write about the "reach" of a body. the two you are considering have similar pixel counts, so the DX has a much higher pixel density. That means that for wildlife, for any given number of pixels on the animal, you will need a much longer lens (1.5x) with the FX camera.

D7000 has more pixels than the D700 and more frame rate than the D800. If I was only shooting wildlife, DX would make sense for me. (Bearing in mind that you can get around most of the ISO performance advantage in low light by going for faster, shorter lenses in the telephoto range - 400 f/2.8 vs 600 f/4, 300 f/2.8 vs 500 f/4, etc.)

Are you wondering whether to go with FX or DX for wildlife

FX is supposed to be better as I noted above as well. However, the "debunking" article attempts to do, I am not sure I agree with. 1) Focal length. No it doesn't increase focal length with DX, but subjects are in fact closer and I know because I own both kind of bodies even if I am not Nikon person.

Because the Nikon D5300 has a smaller than full-frame sensor, what Nikon calls its "DX," sensor. "You should have gotten an FX (full-frame) camera," he told her. "DX" and "FX" are Nikon's designations for the size of the cameras' sensors. It was not very long ago that all DSLR cameras came with sensors whose dimensions were smaller than a frame ...

Crop formats have more depth of field for the same composition than a full frame variant, keeping equivalent focal lengths the same. In other words, shooting a bird on a perch from the same distance using a 400mm lens on a DX body and a 600mm lens on an FX body, the DX body will have deeper depth of field at the same aperture.

Just like you, I see most of these folks using FX. The D850 in a high percentage of cases. It makes some folks think "Man, I gotta get me a D850". What I have learned and noted from my obsession while out shooting, even if just common or boring wildlife is that certainly there is a difference in DX vs FX captures. But, that difference is such ...
