- Hollywood's popular depiction of the American Wild West evokes images of cattle-trail towns overrun with gun-totin', whiskey-guzzlin,' hair-trigger cutthroats who wouldn't hesitate to pump you full of lead at the slightest provocation. My own impression is that gun fights back then (circa 1850-1890) were rare and that people were more civilized than Hollywood credits them.
