    The French inventor, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, invented the first permanent photograph in 1826. It was a breakthrough in the history of photography. As a result, he is credited with being the world’s foremost photographer who invented photography. Niepce used a camera obscura to capture an image and projected it onto a polished pewter sheet.

    In 1827, a gentleman by the name of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created the first picture ever taken that did not quickly fade like others before, known as The Niépce Heliograph (pictured to the right).     Nicéphore Niépce, an amateur inventor living near Chalon-sur-Saône, a city 189 miles (304 km) southeast of Paris, was interested in lithography, a process in which drawings are copied or drawn by hand onto lithographic stone and then printed in ink. Not artistically trained, Niépce devised a method by which light could draw the pictures he needed.
