- Minimum and maximum density. A term used less frequently today than in the days of film, although Dmax is often listed within the specifications of scanners to show the optical density of the darkest shadows which may be recorded. A scanner’s dynamic range is calculated by subtracting Dmin – the brightest highlights capable of being recorded – from …

- DMax is the maximum density that a) occurs in a film or print, or b) that can be distinguished from black by a scanner or densitometer or whatever device. It is a single number representing a single density. Transmission and reflected DMaxs/Dmins (for film, say, vs. a print) are calculated differently from each other, so are not directly comparable.

- Dmax and Dmin are portmanteaus for ensity + aximum or D ensity + inimum, and relate to the optical density a medium is able to record. In terms of digital, the Dmax value is commonly given for scanners and relates to the darkest portion of a print or film from which the scanner can still retrieve detail, and the higher the number, the better.

- Dmax is a technical measurment, but it is also a subjective, aesthetic quality. And it is relative. Pt./Pd. prints with Dmax of maximum of 1.5 or so have very convincing black if viewed by themselves. Put them next to a glossy silver gelatin print with Dmax of 2.10 the blacks of the Pt./Pd. don't look so black.
