    Between 1925 and 1934, Stieglitz took a series of photographs of clouds. The Equivalents , as he came to call them, are some of the first intentionally abstract photographic works of art and have been hailed as his most important contribution to photography.

    Stieglitz’s series of photographs of clouds, which he called Equivalent s ( 49.55.29 ), were made in a similar spirit, embodying this last idea perfectly. The cloud pictures were unmanipulated portraits of the sky that functioned as analogues of Stieglitz’s emotional experience at the moment he snapped the shutter.

    Stieglitz took at least 220 photographs that he called Equivalent or Equivalents; all feature clouds in the sky. The majority of them show only the sky without any horizon, buildings or other objects in the frame, but a small number do include hills or trees. One series from 1927 prominently features poplar trees in the foreground.
