Nikon D80 with Telescope for Astrophotography

I've used my D80 for astrophotography, it's not the best choice for any astro un-modified. Nikon started using a very strong hot mirror, with a cut off well above the IR level. For the best astro-photography you need to be able to get down to 680nm (very deep red), almost all emission nebula are hydrogen and glow that wavelength.

Replied by DaveGrennan on topic Re: Nikon D80 For Astrophotography. John, Any digital SLR will work for astronomy as they all have a 'bulb' setting which means you can expose for as long as you like. Total integration time: 2.4 hours. Nikon designed the D810A DSLR exclusively for those photographers who shoot astrophotography, specifically those who want to capture deep space images of clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae. The camera is uniquely designed to capture nebulae rich in H-alpha emission.

Is the Canon EOS 80D a good camera for …

The 80D is usable up to ISO 800 without horrible noise. That’s not horrible, but nothing to write home about either. (Note your definition of how much noise is acceptable may vary from mine) A full frame body with lower pixel density (megapixels divided by surface area) would probably give you better results.

The Nikon 1 J5 featuring backside illumination image sensor is the best option for astrophotography use. The camera’s compact and lightweight body makes an excellent companion for casual shooting of the stars, and despite the smaller size, its image sensor size is more than adequate to produce beautiful images of the starry sky.

Shooting time-lapse sequences is similar to shooting a single image in that exposure is based on the shooting conditions. For time-lapse photography of the stars in the night sky, use an aperture of about f/5.6 if the moon is full, f/2.8 if the moon is not full. In manual exposure mode, shoot a test shot at 10 seconds.
