I have a >10 yr old Nikon D40X that I used last year in my experimentations in astrophoto (I now do visual only). The camera is indeed limited but if you are new to astrophoto it will be good as a first step, helping you to learn the fundamentals. Some caveats: * you will need a wireless remote control. * focusing is only possible in the the ...

I am by no means an expert so you can ignore my post if you like, but here is my two cents. The easiest way to take pictures using your friend's telescope is to purchase a t-ring. Nikon D40x and astrophotography - IceInSpace

For deep sky, I've found that the D40 likes to produce a fair amount of purple cast in bright stars. It can be eliminated, for the most part, in post-shoot processing. For a camera that doesn't turn off the read-out amplifier during the exposure (such as the 40D Canon does) it controls amp glow far better than the 350D.

For astrophotography you want long exposures. I presume the D40 will only do up to 30s, but you should aim for 2+ minutes. This can be done in "Bulb" setting, which means as long as your finger is pressing the shutter release the shutter will remain open.

However, in master astrophotographer Alan Dyer's review of the Sony α7 III, he said "Levels of luminance and chrominance noise were excellent and similar to – but surprisingly not better than – the Nikon D750". Note that the Nikon D750 has technology that is 3.5 years older than the Sony α7 III. Cameras made since about 2015 by Canon ...
