I have a >10 yr old Nikon D40X that I used last year in my experimentations in astrophoto (I now do visual only). The camera is indeed limited but if you are new to astrophoto it will be good as a first step, helping you to learn the fundamentals. Some caveats: * you will need a wireless remote control. * focusing is only possible in the the ...

I am by no means an expert so you can ignore my post if you like, but here is my two cents. The easiest way to take pictures using your friend's telescope is to purchase a t-ring. This t-ring uses your Nikon mount and lets you put a t-adapter so you can mount the adapter on the telescope and use your friend's telescope as a prime lens.

Posted by David Mottershead at 12:09 on 2011 May 08. Hello PaulI don’t own, and haven’t used a Nikon D40, but up until last month I did own a Nikon D50, which is very similar to the D40, originally sharing the same 6 megapixel sensor among other components, although a 10.2 megapixel sensor was available later in production in the D40x.

Now step into the world of astrophotography, together with a Nikon digital camera. The sea of stars twinkling in the night sky; the moon with the alluring shadows of its craters; the diverse forms cast by the planets; the mysterious nebulae and star clusters: How wonderful would it be if you could capture them beautifully in a photograph?

The Nikon 1 J5 featuring backside illumination image sensor is the best option for astrophotography use. The camera’s compact and lightweight body makes an excellent companion for casual shooting of the stars, and despite the smaller size, its image sensor size is more than adequate to produce beautiful images of the starry sky.

Total integration time: 2.4 hours. Nikon designed the D810A DSLR exclusively for those photographers who shoot astrophotography, specifically those who want to capture deep space images of clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae. The camera is uniquely designed to capture nebulae rich in H-alpha emission.

Nikon D40x and astrophotography - IceInSpace

For deep sky, I've found that the D40 likes to produce a fair amount of purple cast in bright stars. It can be eliminated, for the most part, in post-shoot processing. For a camera that doesn't turn off the read-out amplifier during the exposure (such as the 40D Canon does) it controls amp glow far better than the 350D.
