- Thanks. Paulviking, welcome to the Digital Grin. The Canon 40D has Live View and this would be a good application for that feature. Use the optical viewfinder to get close to prime focus and then engage the Live View and zoom/magnify that view for prime focus. There is even a You Tube about this:

- The 40D delivers higher resolution than the 20D, but you have to look very closely. The higher bit depth of the 40D verse the 20D is evident in bright areas, but using a sub-set of shorter exposures with the 20D and masking that over bright areas could easily overcome this slight difference.

- To give you a sense of image size, the full-frame shot below was taken on an ordinary tripod with a Celestron C8 (F/10, 2030mm focal length) and the Canon 5dMk2. I got even more detail a few nights earlier with a 600mm refractor (and 2x multiplier) and the same tripod. Your 40D should do very well with a 600-1000mm focal length.

- I just upgraded from the 20D to the 40D, and I enjoy doing prime-focus astrophotography, where the camera body basically uses the telescope as its lens. The camera mounts to the telescope using an adapter with an EOS mount. This mount doesn't have any electronics in it, of course - it's purely mechanical. So, I just tried setting up my 40D with a …
