One stop is equal to a halving (or a doubling) of the amount of light let into the camera by that factor. Doubling the shutter speed (making it faster) will DECREASE the exposure by 1-stop. Increasing the aperture by 1.4x (an f/stop) will DECREASE the exposure by 1-stop.
