    Died 1912 Nationality English Birth place Isle of Wight Death place Nottingham Samuel Bourne was a Nottingham bank clerk with a passion for photography. In 1862 he left England for India and remained there for seven years, travelling extensively in the western Himalayas. Bourne often required forty servants to carry his bulky and fragile equipment.

    Bourne's carefully thought-out, meticulously crafted images were collected by tourists, archaeologists, and botanists alike. The album of 131 images from which this view is taken includes 68 photographs by Bourne. With a few exceptions all the other images, ranging from cricket games to amateur theatricals and shipwrecks, were made in India.

    Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) was born in Shropshire, England, and began his career in photography around 1855. Bourne sailed for India in 1863, settling in the northern city of Shimla, which served as the launching place for the lengthy trips he took to regions of modern-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Burma.

    Bourne made pictures using the wet collodion process on 10 x 12 glass plates. While one may marvel at a photographer using such laborious equipment in such unforgiving terrain, Bourne had it a little easy. After all, he was not an exception to the colonial mindset.
