    Roy DeCarava, in full Roy Rudolph DeCarava, (born December 9, 1919, New York, New York, U.S.—died October 27, 2009, New York City), American photographer whose images of African Americans chronicle subjects such as daily life in Harlem, the civil rights movement, and jazz musicians. DeCarava won a scholarship to study at the Cooper Union School of Art (1938–40).

    Roy DeCarava (1919–2009) was born in New York’s Harlem neighborhood, and first studied art in the city’s public schools, including at Textile High School, from which he graduated with honors in 1938.
