Rockclimbing photos of asses are not very good. If you can't climb, perhaps they can rig a toprope for you and let you hang from halfway down the cliff, then just lower you after the climb. If you are going to be on the ground and using something like a 300mm lens, get a tripod. Even just resting the camera on a rock will be a huge improvement.

Something like a 70-200L would probably work fine if you're doing fairly small climbs where you won't be very far from the climber. Since you're outdoors and will probably have plenty of light, the f/4 may actually be preferrable to the f/2.6 just to save on some size/weight.

The rash of shots that hit the front page recently were taken with those two lenses. I also have a 50/1.4 which is useful for the end of the day when the light fades. I have a pair of superfast prime lenses (28/1.4 and 85/1.4) but I'm selling them to buy a D100 and a 14mm lens for it, which will act like a 21mm lens on that digital body.

The lens is also much faster. 50mm is not my primary working focal length for climbing and landscapes...it's more around 20mm or 24mm (I personally shoot a Sigma EX APO HSM 17-35 f2.8-4). In this focal length, both the Canon and Sigma fixed focal lenses, wide open at f2.8 are excellent. Expect to pay around $400.

There are a few notable challenges that present themselves. First and foremost is your own safety – learn the proper techniques, ropes, and systems management for shooting tethered to a cliff. Know, however, that once you are tethered, horizontal mobility becomes rather difficult, so your creativity may be restricted.

These lenses are great for bird & other wildlife photography. Remember that it is possible to rent these special purpose (expensive) from many camera shops. That should bump the price of a $3000 lens down to about $100 for a long weekend.

10 Rules for Climbing Photography

    https://www.climbing.com/news/10-rules-climbing-photography/
As the photo editor for Climbing magazine, I’ve spent countless hours of my life click-click-clicking through climbing photos to find the best of the best for our print publication. I’ve seen images that range from goosebump-inducing, palm-sweating, mind-blowing greatness to eye-assaulting, soul-crushing lameness. We all know climbing is a breathtaking, visually …

More advanced ones, like the D300 or D700, add a lot of bulk and weight for relatively little extra benefit, especially if one adds for the much heavier pro-grade FX lenses. Sigma 18-50 f/2.8: My wide zoom, and the only lens I take on summit pushes.
