- If you are looking to do both planetary and DSO's, and you only want one scope, then I would go with the SCT, and add a focal reducer. Using an F/6.3 reducer would get you to around 1700mm, which is doable (though not ideal), given great alignment, and well trained pec, and good guiding. - In addition, you'll always have nice tight stars with the refractor, with the SCT your stars will be affected more by collimation, seeing conditions, field curvature and tube currents. As others have said, if you're mostly interested in planets, small galaxies and planetary nebula then the SCT could be the way to go but a 4" refractor will give you successful results much quicker.

- IME SCT's can offer "Refractor" views however the collimation has has to be near perfect and the SCT has to be fully acclimated. Unless one is living in the tropics the acclimation rarely happens, thus the Refractor shows the sharper Image. Newts are far closer to Refractors (for acclimation) than SCT's are. Best option IMO of to keep one of each!
