- Re: Photography and Potassium Cyanide: How do the Facts Compare with Fiction? I think the most used was potassium ferricyanide, a salt of potassium (duh!) and a complex of cyanide and ferric ions ( [Fe (CN) 6] -3 ). Ferricyanide in itself is not that dangerous if handled properly, but can liberate cyanide gas (HCN) under certain conditions.
Potassium Cyanide - Assignment Point

- Potassium cyanide is a white poisonous granular soluble solid substance used in photography and in extracting gold from its ores. It is highly toxic. The moist solid emits small amounts of hydrogen cyanide due to hydrolysis, which smells like bitter almonds. Not everyone, however, can smell this; the ability to do so is a genetic trait.

- Yes potassium cyanide was once used in photographic darkrooms, back in the C19th, along with mercury vapour, carbide lamps, gun-cotton, black lead, lead paint, and a whole host of other stuff we wouldn't go near these days. IIRC one of the victims in the film "Kind hearts and coronets" was killed with darkroom chemicals.
Potassium Ferrocyanide uses in photography?

- Potassium Ferrocyanide is useful for latent image bleaching. e.g. on negatives it reduces highlight density, on positives it reduces the shadow density. If you google something like "ferrocyanide in image bleaching", all the references and formulae which come up are definitely using the "ferri" salt. Although the names are similar and confusing ...

- The use of potassium nitrate and nitric acid is described in the development section. These additives, along with sugar, have been known and used since the modern revival started in the 1990s. They are easy to use and we suggest that wet platers experiment to find the color they prefer given the fixer they use.
