Cotton muslin has a similar plain weave to cotton canvas, but typically has a smoother, softer hand. Lighter weight versions are used for a variety of applications, including apparel, whereas heavy-weight theatrical muslin is traditionally used for backdrops and cycloramas. Heavy weight theatrical muslin (also known as scenic muslin) is used extensively …

From what I know, muslin is thinner than canvas and does not wrinkle quite as bad. I have a few muslin backdrops and they fold and roll up easily with few wrinkle's when opened. I dyed a few of mine and had no problem with the muslin but never have had any canvas ones to try dying on. It seems like most poeple use muslin so I figured it was the best.

Canvases are generally more durable and used more often when a more definite type of background is going to be created (more like a scenic) whereas muslin is used mostly for the mottled/stained look. If you are going to use it only in the studio, canvases can be very good but cumbersome if you move them around a lot.

Didn't feel like this was worth a 'full answer,' but it is possible to make white and black seamless paper last longer... A lot longer in fact... For about $20 you can buy white or black shower stall material (get the non-textured kind) and then simply lay it down over the paper 'tail' on the floor and have people stand on that.

In general, keeping backdrops clean can be a challenge. Some are easier to clean than others. However, hand-painted canvas and paper backdrops can’t be cleaned without damaging the surfaces, while muslin and vinyl backdrops are easier to clean. You may need to wash large muslins commercially.

A high quality backdrop does not come cheap. But, muslin is inexpensive compared to other popular backdrop options, including canvas. Some people think that muslin is priced too high, however it’s important to remember that this is a low maintenance and durable fabric that will last for years, so it’s a wise investment.

Larry Seller, one of our SC artists/instructors has an excellent video found by that type of search. (Both duck and poplin fabrics are heavy weight and of a tight weave, duck probably being the heavier and stiffer, more like unprimed canvas). Fabric stores may carry untreated canvas as it is used in camping and many sports.
