What is an exposure in photography? | Adobe

    https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photography/discover/exposure-in-photography.html
Exposure is the amount of light that reaches your camera’s sensor, creating visual data over a period of time. That time period could be fractions of a second or entire hours. The right exposure is a balancing act. Overexposure leads to overexposed highlights and faded-looking images. Underexposed images are dark and hard to see.

Exposure time = reciprocal value of the focal length. For instance: 50 mm focal distance, at least 1/50 s. The rule of thumb (without image stabilization) is, that the exposure time should at least comply with the reciprocal value of the focal length. If a focal distance of 50 mm has been chosen, then the exposure time should be at least 1/50 s.

In the field, another application is simply to improve your “mental meter” and recognize when something may be wrong with your camera’s recommended exposure. If it’s a cloudy day, and your camera settings read something like f/8 at 1/4000 second, there’s a problem. Most likely, you accidentally bumped up your ISO too high.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPOSURE CALCULATION - A HISTORY

    http://brayebrookobservatory.org/BrayObsWebSite/HOMEPAGE/PHOTO_EXP_CALC_HIST.html
To determine exposure time three factors need to be known: i) the relative aperture of the lens (the focal ratio or f/#) ii) the amount of light either shining on the subject or reflected off it. iii) the sensitivity of the photographic emulsion or sensor. i) The relative aperture of the lens is the simplest factor to work out.

If they’re not, reduce the exposure time slightly. As a rule of thumb, I never go beyond 30 seconds when photographing the night sky. That’s despite the fact that I’ve got a full-frame sensor and a 14mm focal length. More about night photography
