This first installment on the chemistry of photography is intended to introduce, in a simplified way, the basic concepts of silver halide photography. It will not delve into the physics of optics, the functioning of cameras and lenses, photographic techniques, non-silver processes, or the artistic aspects of photography.

The Chemistry of . . . Photography | Discover Magazine

Film is basically a lot of silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin on a plastic backing. When a camera's shutter opens, light photons stream through the lens, fall on some of the crystals, and dislodge electrons from the halide ions. Some of the electrons glom onto nearby ions of silver, converting them to neutral atoms.

Examination of photographic processes from the 19th century to the present digital age is an effective means to intellectually engage nonscience majors with science. A laboratory course for nonscience majors exploring these processes is described in this article. Ionic and covalent compounds, oxidation–reduction reactions, precipitation reactions, and complex ion …

Background. A photograph is an image made by a photo-chemical reaction which records the impression of light on a surface coated with silver atoms. The reaction is possible due to the light-sensitive properties of silver halide crystals. Equation form for silver halides: Ag + + e - Ag Species produced include: Ag2+, Ag2o, Ag3+, Ag3o, Ag4+, Ag4o. In 1556, the alchemist …

There are three main chemical stages of producing film: manufacturing, shooting, and development — all three of which are very light sensitive and precise. They also vary for the three main types of film: colour negative, slide, and black and white. We will primarily focus on colour negative film and the C-41 developing process for this article.
