James Ritty and the Invention of the First Cash Register

    He began to contemplate whether or not a similar mechanism could be made to record the cash transactions made at his saloons. Five years later, Ritty and John Birch received a patent for inventing the cash register. Ritty then invented what was nicknamed the "Incorruptible Cashier" or the first working mechanical cash register.

    The cash register, invented by the Ritty brothers of Dayton, Ohio, had a large display to indicate the sums customers paid. It also had a locked compartment that tallied total receipts. This is the Rittys' first machine, or an early replica of it. It was the basis for a commercial product called "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier."

    James Ritty. This is a photograph of the first National Cash register ever used. It was used at the Miners' Supply Co. in Coalton, Ohio. James Ritty was born on October 29, 1836, in Dayton, Ohio. As a young man he briefly attended college to study medicine, but with the American Civil War's outbreak, Ritty left school and enlisted in the Fourth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry as a first lieutenant.
