- On a top down level, lacrosse is more about the struggle of offense vs defense rather than individual isolation. While there are plenty of opportunities to photograph individual players, the most interesting photos come in the dance between the attack and the defense. I like to stay a little bit looser with my cropping to catch that interplay.

- You can shoot Lacrosse with one or more cameras. Most people will use a zoom and a prime, or a short and long zoom, but that is not always necessary. I have shot it using a 300 f/4 and an 85 f/1.4 (the 85 f/1.8 will also work well). Using two prime lenses does, however, require more moving around. Lacrosse starts with a face-off.

- PHOTOGRAPHING ACTION-PACKED LACROSSE. I’d never photographed a lacrosse game before so I was intrigued when the mom of a high school student asked me to do a series of photographs of her daughter in casual dress, a hunting gear, and her lacrosse goalie outfit. - Lacrosse is a very different shooting environment than hockey is. The play area is larger, and the courts are normally outdoors, with quite a few more visual distractions in the background. Keep an eye out around the edges of your frame! sublimechord, Mar 27, 2010. #1.

- When making decisions on your camera settings, there are two things to consider: the effect you want, and your limitations. We know in Lacrosse there will be a lot of running and action. So the first decision is the effect I want. I’ll need to freeze the action so that there will be no motion blur.

- It is a great lens. A 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4 TC will result in more images because of less weight and better responsiveness. The Sigma has beautiful image quality but it is really big, heavy and zoom ring is slow to use compared to 70-200. If fewer, better images are the goal, the Sigma is the choice.
High School Sports Photography Tips

- You must first determine which sport (s) you are going to shoot, and the location (s) involved. Unfortunately most High School venues are poorly lit, so a camera with a High ISO capability is almost always a necessity, unless you restrict yourself to daytime events. The next necessity is fast glass, f/2.8 or faster (though there are exceptions).
