- 1830s–1930s The opalotype process, while not widely used, also evolved throughout the history of photography and could be made with either collodion or gelatin as the light-sensitive emulsion coating. Opalotypes were named for the substrate, opal glass, a translucent white glass. They were also called milk-glass positives.

Opalotypes were printed on sheets of opaque, translucent white glass; early opalotypes were sometimes hand-tinted with colors to enhance their effect. - The Opalotype, or Opaltype, sometimes known as a milk glass positive is an 1850s process, patented by Glover and Boyd in 1857 in Liverpool. The method varies, either a silver gelatin or carbon emulsion being the commonest, but collodion could also be used. They aren't made in camera, but in a darkroom from a conventional negative.
