The exposure is 20S (Auto dark frame subtracted) 400ASA and the lens is an old 50mmf1.8 stopped down to 2.8. The sky wasnt quite dark but the photo just shows M57. I'm really pleased! Anyone else use an Olympus (I got one as it was the cheapest at £275 ($550) for the single lens kit). Attached Thumbnails #2 NewAstronomer Soyuz Posts: 3,921

I'm hoping to strip the filters (maybe keep the anti-dust one) and add a peltier cooler to the CCD.

Don’t worry, the camera will make you do this through the Live Composite Mode. This will help the camera process the image. Here are some basic settings for your first shot: ISO 1250 at f/2.0 for 20 minutes. Hyper focus the lens (place it in manual and set to infinity) Set your white balance to CWB (custom) and adjust to 3700K

I started with an E-500 (for deep sky objects) and an inexpensive web camera for planets (stacking images). Then came the never-ending upgrades. Following the natural progression of AP, the mount will be the single largest investment, next is the glass and last is the camera with all the other stuff that makes it work together...

Astrophotography is all about high ISO performance and excellent low light capabilities. But the idea that M43 cameras are not capable of shooting the night sky is from the early days, when M43 was hardly a thing and everyone was shooting on Nikon or Canon.

It’s an enjoyable camera and it can handle just about anything you throw at it. But its Micro Four Thirds sensor isn’t quite optimal for for astrophotography – a bit on the small and noisy side. I’m still working on getting the settings right to reduce sensor noise for general wide field and deep field astro work, but below are some I’ve managed.
