Modifying a Nikon D90 DSLR for Infrared Photography …

    https://randombio.com/d90infrared.html
It's clear that if you plan to use the D90 exclusively for infrared photography, removing both filters is the best solution. The camera will be much more sensitive in infrared than a normal D90 is in visible light (at least under incandescent lights or in sunlight—fluorescent lamps give off much less infrared, and will appear darker).

Is my DSLR (nikon d90) capable of taking Infrared photos?

    https://nikonmag.com/talk/dx/is-my-dslr-nikon-d90-capable-of-taking-infrared-photos.html
The D90, like most modern DSLRs is fitted with a low pass filter (right in front of the sensor). This blocks out a lot of the infrared light, this is to prevent funny effects from photographing in normal conditions. Adding an R72 filter will remove the visible spectrum leaving only the IR portion.

Infrared photography with D3100?: Nikon DX SLR (D40 …

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3379642
As with newer Nikon SLRs the D3100 probably has quite a strong hot mirror filter making it not so suitable for IR photography. Earlier Nikon DSLRs, like the D70 and D50, have a weak hot mirror filter and they may be used quite successfully with an IR filter. I was able to pre-set WB with my D70 but never managed it with a D40.
