Photographing the Night Sky | Nikon

For time-lapse photography of the stars in the night sky, use an aperture of about f/5.6 if the moon is full, f/2.8 if the moon is not full. In manual exposure mode, shoot a test shot at 10 seconds. “I would always recommend using the manual exposure mode to avoid the exposure changing from one frame to the next which can cause an annoying flicker in the final time-lapse movie,” suggests Steve.

Both cameras were set to f2.8, 15 seconds, and ISO 2000, and both were set to exactly same white balance in Photoshop Camera Raw. As you can see, the photo from my D800 has a more colorful sky, and is leaning towards the more red tones in the sky. The D810A, however, appears a bit darker and less red in the sky.

D800E shoots the night sky May 14, 2012 With the D800E, the 85mm f/1.4G, & 800 ISO, I was able to capture the sky and test the D800E with some astrophotography. These images were processed with NX2 and I did not do much to them other than darken the sky and check the sharpening. There was no noise at all.

F/3.5 and faster (a lower F-number) will work great for shooting photos of the night sky. A slower aperture may cause problems and your photos will appear underexposed or noisy. The F-stop number is usually printed on the lens. You also want your lens to be wide-angle. Wide-angle means more FOV in your photos.
