    Re: Sports shots with the Nikon D80 18-200 lens. here are some tips that I follow myself to get good shots (and i use a D40 + 18-55 kit + 55-200 non-VR) outdoors: use your lens hood + shoot at somewhere near 1/1000s shutter speed. only go under that if it's starting to get near dusk and it's getting darker outside.

    When I use my D80 for outdoor sports, here is how I set it: Single area focus mode, center spot, normal zone, continuous focus mode. If you are not good at tracking the subject you are shooting, use the wide zone or dynamic focus mode. I suggest you set your ISO to 100 or 200, turn your auto ISO on, set your shutter speed at a minimum of 1/1000.
