- I just bought the Nikon D60 kit with the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR Lens kit. I took a few quick pics with it yesterday and love it! However, one my main reasons for buying this is for indoor shots (like at parties, restaurants, family gatherings). So basically people in low light or room light situations.

- A D60 is very old sensor technology. Newer sensors are appreciably better in low light, so the first way to optimize the D60 is to buy something that's not a D60... (The D7000 or D5100 are much better, for example.) The next would be to get a faster lens than the f/1.8 (f/1.4 or f/1.2), though that'll only buy you up to a stop and has its own ...

Nikon D60 vs. D200 for low light shooting? (agates1272)
- The D200 is a pro body that will do a lot more then the D60 which is basically an upgraded D40. (Like bracketing, mirror lockup, better AF, the list goes on, better histogram. The D200 will also take a lot more physical abuse.) For real low light shooting, AF doesn't work anyway. The viewfinder and focusing screen are FAR superior on the D200.

- Aperture - set to f/1.8. Shutter - set as slow as you can hand hold, 1/15 or 1/30 perhaps. ISO - set to get approximately the correct exposure, may have to go to 800 or higher. This may get you there. If so you can possibly use slightly lower ISO or faster shutter.

- It's easy to check: point your camera in a dark spot (or leave the lens cap on) and click the shutter release halfway. If you see a bright light go on, you're set. If not, go into your menus and enable it. I'm not familiar with the D5000, but on the similar D90 it's in Custom Settings -> Autofocus -> Built-in AF-assist illuminator (a3).
