    Your D3100 will work fine and exhibit very good noise characteristics (the D3100 is not one of the star eater models BTW and amp noise is low). However, long exposures are not plug-n-play like the Canon. For exposures longer than 30sec you will need a seperate bulb cable or Showstring adapter (a usb driven bulb cable).
