Nikon D300 and Astrophotography: astro_imaging - LiveJournal

The D300 shows a lot of sensor noise at ISO 1600 and higher. This goes back to no automatic modes. Use manual mode so you can set the ISO level. However, a low ISO means the sensor is less sensitive to light so the shutter has to be left open longer leading to star tracks without an equatorial mount.

The older Nikon DSLR's with ccd sensors could not compete with Canon CMOS senors, but the latest Nikons using CMOS senors are quite capable. I use my D300s for wide field astrophotography work and am quite pleased with results. You should really give it a try before you switch to Canon.

The D300S has a peak quantum efficiency (Qe) around 32%. This means that, at the wavelengths it is most sensitive, only 32%, or roughly 1/3, of the photons that hit the sensor are detected. For typical DSLR uses such s daylight, well-lit interior, and flash photography, this is just fine. For astrophotography, this is problematic.

The high ISO sensitivity displayed by Nikon is for the marketing: Nikon D3 CMOS (and also the CMOS D300 CMOS - Sony origin) is a very high quality sensor, but in the end, Nikon just rises now the level of Canon technology.

You may have heard of the 500 rule, but because the Nikon D3500 is a crop sensor, we’ll be using the 300 rule. It’s quite simple, divide 300 by the focal length of your lens. So let’s say your lens is 18mm, 300/18 is 16 seconds. So the longest shutter speed you should shoot at …
