With night photos, you are working with relatively long shutter times. Without a GOOD tripod, you may want to try a sturdy surface to press your camera onto, to make sure it doesn't vibrate. Lamp poles and such tend to move with passing traffic, so they may not be stable enough. Try a solid wall, stone ledge, or something like that. Eric --

The D300 shows a lot of sensor noise at ISO 1600 and higher. This goes back to no automatic modes. Use manual mode so you can set the ISO level. However, a low ISO means the sensor is less sensitive to light so the shutter has to be left open longer leading to star tracks without an equatorial mount.

1 A 50mm lens on a APS-C DSLR is going to be quite a long effective focal length for general night sky photography. It isn't that you can't do it, the issue is more that you will start to see star trails very quickly with that length. If what you want is star trails then you should have all that you need to make an attempt.

But if you're using a tripod—which is a great idea for night shots, as it will stabilize the camera during long exposures—be sure VR is turned off. Shutter speeds that are likely to yield the best results: 1/15, 1/8, 1/4 second or longer—and you'll need VR or a tripod for those. For more advanced night shots, a tripod is necessary.

On the most recent bodies, CAs are easily corrected in-camera (I was pleased with the Tokina 11-16 on my D80, and even more so after having switched to the D300s) Don't want to hijack your thread but I was the impression up to now that night sky photography was done with a normal lens (i.e. 35 on DX or 50 on FX).
