Near infrared for astrophotography? Technical I am looking at modifying my D7000 to do near infrared photography using a Kolari 665 or 720nm replacement filter, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with near IR astrophotography.

IR astrophotography - Cloudy Nights

For IR well outside of the visible light range the atmosphere simply glows too brightly in that wavelength, and blocks much of the rest. However, as LakeFX said, near IR is common, the standard example being Hydrogen-Alpha emission nebulae. H-Alpha light is right on the border between visible and IR and standard camera filters block it.

Comparison between an image taken with the FSQ-85ED using only the visible spectrum (conventional RGB image) and a color image by adding a near infrared channel instead of the conventional filter R (a Schott RG850 filter): The exposure time is 5 x 300 seconds in each filter. The infrared band is obtained with a filter RG850 (in place of the filter Astrodon R).

Is there any point to imaging in Near IR? : …

Is there any point to imaging in Near IR? Acquisition. I know that’s a bit subjective, but are there any targets that could benefit/look interesting when shot at wavelengths of say 750-1200nm? Part of me thinks it might be too close to the visible spectrum, and that the targets would look essentially the same. If you have any experience ...

Near-Infrared Astrophotography On some cameras, infrared photos are marred by a rectangular (or sometimes circular) reflection or bright spot in the center. This is caused by a reflection of the sensor off the rear of the infrared filter.

Which IR filter is best to image planets? - Christophe Pellier

    https://www.planetary-astronomy-and-imaging.com/en/which-ir-filter-to-image-planets/
The IR filter is, in astronomy, a filter that blocks visible wavelengths and passes only the near infrared, a band of “color” that starts from around 700 nanometers and ends around 1000 nm (1 micron) where the sensitivity of your camera comes to an end.

Infrared – Astrophotography

    https://astrophotography.mk/category/infrared/
The modern camera sensors are sensitive to a wider range within the electromagnetic spectrum, including the infrared light. However, the widely available color cameras on the market include an infrared blocking filter (or, simply, IR filters) in front of the sensor. If they did not, all photos that we take would have a strong reddish tint, as the infrared signal would get sorted together and ...
