Get a spot meter because in a night photo you most likely have parts of your composition that has highlights and super dark areas and everything inbetween. That way you can figure out the exposure for different areas of your composition and find a balance. If ya want more grain and contrast get some Ilford or Kodak 3200.

Nighttime photography settings are a good place to begin: opening up your aperture, slowing down your shutter speed, or (controversially) fiddling with your ISO (the sensitivity of your digital camera — comparable to film speed in a film camera). One answer to this problem is to use spot metering and expose for the highlights. So meter off the highlights, then set your exposure between +1 and +2. The +1/+2 setting will keep your highlights looking bright but will also keep the highlights within the dynamic range of your camera. Do not worry as much about the dark portions of your picture.
