Let's just say you shouldn't put any money on it. Jim Zuckerman explains how you can get better results with a handheld meter when lights are low. The built-in light meter in your camera is completely unreliable when shooting at night. If I were giving odds, I’d say your chances of taking a photograph with correct exposure using a through-the-lens (TTL) meter—which is the most …

These days I use a spot meter and stick the brightest area in the scene at Zone VII or VIII. Let the shadows fall where they will. Buy Acros 100 or Provia 100f and you pretty much don't have to worry much about the reciprocity adjustment normally required for night shooting since those two film stocks have awesome tolerance for long exposure.

Get a spot meter because in a night photo you most likely have parts of your composition that has highlights and super dark areas and everything inbetween. That way you can figure out the exposure for different areas of your composition and find a balance. If ya want more grain and contrast get some Ilford or Kodak 3200.

When you're using the "evaluative" or "matrix" metering mode to read the whole scene, your camera tries to adjust the exposure so that the average exposure falls within an acceptable range. Nighttime shots tend to have large dark areas, and your camera tries to compensate for those by increasing the exposure.

Night Photography Settings - Guide to Getting the Best …

    https://www.digitalphotomentor.com/night-photography-settings-guide-exposure/
The first part of setting your exposure for night photography is determining what exposure level is necessary. That is done by your camera’s meter, of course, but at night it is a tricky operation and your camera’s meter can be fooled. Night photography usually involves extremely bright highlights in a sea of darkness.

9 Night Photography Tips for Nailing Your Exposure …

    https://digital-photography-school.com/tips-for-getting-proper-exposure-for-night-photography/
Determining the proper exposure level can be tricky at night, and each metering mode presents its own challenges. If you use evaluative metering, the camera is likely to be confused. If you use spot or partial metering, the meter will jump around, depending on whether you’ve aimed at a bright light or a dark background.

Metering Modes in Photography (The SIMPLE Guide!)

Evaluative/Matrix metering normally works well enough but it can be easily thrown off by a very dark object or a bright reflection. Review your photo before moving on, checking that the exposure is correct. If it’s not right, use what you’ve got as a starting point and adjust the settings accordingly without looking at the light meter.

Night photography: The basics & tips for beginners | Adobe

Nighttime photography settings are a good place to begin: opening up your aperture, slowing down your shutter speed, or (controversially) fiddling with your ISO (the sensitivity of your digital camera — comparable to film speed in a film camera). But you can also look for ways to adjust the light on your subject.
