Canon 18-135mm macro capability vs 100mm macro …

- A lens normally can't focus on something really close to it. Your 18-135 lens can only focus on things that are around .4 meters away. The 100mm macro on the other hand can focus on something at .3 meters. This may not seem like a lot, but, it is enough that the maximum magnification of the lens is 1/4 that of a true macro lens.

I am curious to know if this lens will give acceptable results before looking into purchasing a dedicated Macro lens.
Teach me about extension tubes, will my 18-135 do …

- My 18-55 and my 24-105 do this and they have less working distance than a comparible prime. Your 10-18 would probably have the focus point inside the lens even with the smallest tube. But hey, just buy the $50 of tubes and play around with them, they are great. I can get almost 2.5X magnification with my 60/2.8 macro lens.

- Magnification = extension / focal length. So you need 67.5 mm for 1:2 and 135mm for 1:1. However, that is only with the lens set on infinity. If you focus the 135mm closer, you can treat it as having some built in extension of its own, so in practice you will need quite a bit less than those figures.

- Like the 200mm f/2 lens, the 135mm takes advantage of lens compression to create beautiful, bokeh-filled works of art. The 135mm f/2 (or f/1.8) lens is also much smaller, lighter, and less cost-prohibitive than the 200mm f/2, which makes it a great go-to portrait lens.
