The M8 for Infrared Photography - Bernd Margotte

The M8 for Infrared Photography Introduction The Leica M8 was introduced in 2007 and was the first digital M camera on the market. I still remember all the discussion before that introduction about the feasibility of a digital M-Leica. People were concerned about the small space between the lens and the film (and later the sensor).

INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY WITH THE LEICA M8 Frank Lloyd Wright's Rudin House: standard black and white image on the left, infrared on the right No digital camera makes it as easy as the Leica M8 to use infrared light to create surreal pictures that stand out in radiantly bright green leafs in extreme contrast of a dark sky, for example.

The M8 offers a utility in IR photography that is not possible with IR film, or with other digital cameras, converted or otherwise. Use of a tripod or monopod is certainly advisable but hand-held exposures are possible. Correction for IR focus is a necessity, but at least we now have the data for a range of lenses.

aplumpton. I'm interested in using my M8 for B&W infrared photography. Presumably the minimum IR. cut off in front of the sensor will be usefull in this regard. I will try dark orange, medium. red and a B&W IR filter in tests, but do not own a dark red or opaque filter (like the 092 or. 093 B+W filters or the R72 Hoya).

So, I ask, "When do you do IR photography at f/1.4 or f/1.0?" 80% or more of all IR photos I saw are landscape with greens in there and with that in mind, what f-stop do you use? Should I worry about focusing inaccuracies? You tell me.

Slapped the Hoya R72 filters on the M8 and went for a walk and the mystery is solved.

Leica M8 IR Filter / Leica M8 Infrared Filter

Infrared Filter for Leica M8 – Conclusion It is very clear from the images that the Marumi IR filter does a great job of correcting the Leica M8 colours so they now look like colours I would obtain using my Leica M9. This will give the M8 a new lease of life as I can now use it for both colour photography and black and white images.

(Note: the b&w image with the lady on the bridge is shot with a Leica M7 and Ilford SFX 200 film, the close up tree b&w photo against the sun is taken with a Leica M1 and Efke IR820 film. The rest of the images are from the M8) [ad#Adsense Blog Sq Embed Image] INFRARED

A CCD sensor – as in the M8 – has a bayer filter. This filter is made up of red, green and blue tiny little filters that are sat above the photosites. The photosites are the tiny little light sensitive surfaces that measure the luminosity of the light hitting them. Four of these photosites make up a pixel, two green, one red and one blue.

Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder - Complete Digital …

The Leica M8 is a beautiful camera, very well-designed and sturdy, but possessed of a few design flaws. One of the main advantages of the M series is its small size. The compact, quiet cameras allowed unobtrusive, surreptitious street shooting, making it the camera of choice for photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eliott Erwitt.
