- British, 1813–1877. Born 11 March 1813; died 27 February 1877. Anderson was born Isaac Atkinson, assumed the name William Nugent Dunbar as a painter, and then the name James Anderson as a photographer in Rome. Anderson settled in Rome in 1838 and began photographing in 1849, producing views of Rome and of sculptures and paintings.

He became interested in photography in the late 1840s, and in 1853, he opened the Anderson photographic studio in Rome. He specialized in photographs of ancient and Renaissance art and monuments.
