- Canon introduced STM autofocus lenses primarily to resolve an issue that their previous Ultrasonic motors could not: smooth autofocus when shooting video. In still photography, focus occurs before the image is shot, so that how the motor gets to focus is not as big a concern. But in video, focus (well specifically autofocus) occurs while video is being …

- With an effective focal length of 56mm, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is arguably a little short for macro photography but fits well with Canon’s APS-C format DSLRs, for which it’s designed. Extreme close-up shooting benefits from hybrid image stabilization and a built-in LED Macro Lite, which is useful for both stills and video capture.
Is STM better than USM? - Digital Photography Review
- https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3217084
- The STM is not a rebranded micro motor, as you wrongly typed on you post above. A stepper motor is vastly superior, also in way to USM. The 17-85 uses a ring USM motor, mot a micro USM one. The 18-135mm has totally redesigned optics, just about every lens element has changed. Its MTFs are a lot better too.
