Anybody know how to work the interval timer on D7000?: …

Nikon did a horrible job explaining how it works and naming the menu. Now that I understand it, The D7000 internal works great. Your "Interval" ..... the time from start of exposure to start of the next exposure. So a 15sec exposure + plus time it takes to process the 15 sec exposure (green write light goes out) + 6 sec delay (in this case as example) for next shot.

NIKON INTERVAL TIMER - John Shaw Photography

    https://www.johnshawphoto.com/nikon-interval-timer/
In Nikon-speak the “interval” is the time from the start of one frame until the start of the next, so you need to add that one second to the sequence. 30 seconds exposure, 31 seconds interval, 30 seconds exposure, 31 seconds interval, etc. Try this, and to your surprise this timer thing still won’t work right. The problem here is that while the marked shutter speed might say 30 …

Set the interval to 25 seconds interval for 30 seconds exposure and the camera worked until the both grip and internal batteries died. Looking through the photos' time stamp (EXIF), the time between shots are actually 50 seconds. It boggles my mind, why 50? I had noise reduction off and was shooting fine jpg.
