- It does take significantly longer in exposing your shots in each scene but it should yield what you are looking for with a nice Hoya R67 IR (assuming the Nikon D90 kit lens is used) filter over your lens. In this case, a tripod is mandatory. No amount of VR technology is going to help you shoot IR images handheld.

- It just takes a longer exposure. The D40 is a much better choice due to the passivity of the filter to IR; on a D90, an image capture might take an IR image in 60 seconds while the D40 can do it in one second (same settings, filter and lighting conditions). Lots of examples on the net for unmodified D90 IR images. jonal

- As with newer Nikon SLRs the D3100 probably has quite a strong hot mirror filter making it not so suitable for IR photography. Earlier Nikon DSLRs, like the D70 and D50, have a weak hot mirror filter and they may be used quite successfully with an IR filter. I was able to pre-set WB with my D70 but never managed it with a D40.

- I shoot in infrared at 720nm on the modified Nikon D70S, Nikon D90 modified with the R25A filter, Canon Powershoot G9 (year 2007) modified at 590nm. In full spectrum I also use astrophotography. For infrared I put the filters on the lenses on the Nikon D600, D60 and Canon Powershot A490 / 5 (Jpeg and dng with CHDK) and Canon T3i (600D).
