On the 25th January 1983, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) – a joint project between the United States (NASA), the United Kingdom (SERC) and the Netherlands (NIVR) – was launched into space to perform a survey of the entire sky at infrared wavelengths. The satellite recorded over 500,000 infrared sources in the sky and made discoveries including six new comets, a …

Infrared Astronomy: More Than Our Eyes Can See - USRA

    https://www.sofia.usra.edu/multimedia/about-sofia/sofia-mobile-information/infrared-astronomy-more-our-eyes-can-see
The infrared image shows several regions of hot, dense cores within clouds of gas and dust. These are the stellar nurseries where new stars like the Sun and planets like the Earth are being born. Embedded in these molecular clouds, the young stars are difficult to see in visible light, but their presence is revealed by infrared radiation.

Infrared Astronomy - WebbTelescope.org

    https://webbtelescope.org/webb-science/the-observatory/infrared-astronomy
Infrared light is important to astronomy in three major ways. First, some objects are just better observed in infrared wavelengths. Some bodies of matter that are cool and do not emit much energy or visible brightness, like people or a young planet, still radiate in the infrared.

An introduction to infrared (IR) photography | Adobe

    https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photography/discover/infrared-photography.html
What is infrared photography? The human eye cannot see infrared light. It lies beyond the visible light spectrum. But you can take photographs with an infrared filter or infrared film, which produces intriguing effects, to peer into this world. Colors and textures take on unique properties when reflected with infrared light, also known as IR light.

The infrared waveband extends from 0.8 to 1,000 microns. In astronomy, infrared enables us to view elements of the Universe that are invisible to the human eye. Hidden stars of the Eta Carinae Nebula are revealed in infrared red light in this image captured by the Very Large telescope. Credit: ESO/T. Preibisch.

IR is supposed to give good contrast for planetary photography. Like the Astronomik ProPlanet 742 and 807. I did try M42 with the ProPlanet 742 in Hap Griffin Full mod T2i. It wasn't all that interesting. However I abandoned the IR pass session after only a few images because I didn't want to lose the time for regular data that I knew would be good.

If you’re familiar with IR photography, you know that color and IR light focus at different positions on the film plane. This effect is seen in astro photos as “star bloat”. Since the stars also emit IR, they will sometimes appear out of focus.
