Sanguivorous bats are the stuff of vampire legends—they survive by drinking blood. Two of the three types drink the blood of birds, and the third type drinks the blood of mammals, including people, so you probably want to mostly avoid trying to photograph the sanguivorous bat species even if you do happen to live in the same region.

AFAIK there is no way to photograph them without flash. The only time that I have successfully photographed bats they were easy to shoot whilst stationary feeding on pollen on a tree about 6 ft away, but incredibly difficult to catch in flight:

There's a large roosting site near where I live where thousands of bats take to the skies on dusk. I tried various settings but couldn't get anything. I used a tripod but pretty much it was a case of taking lucky shots. Because of the low shutter speeds I got nothing more than streaks of pale almost invislble bat movement. Thanks Maggs

Re: Photographing bats at dusk. I shot the hoards of bats exiting Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico at dusk with a film camera. However, I was not interested in individual images of bats but rather the stream of exiting bats which are so thick they look like smoke pouring out of the face of the cave. So a slower shutter speed was O.K.

When the subject (bat) is close to you, keep your camera focused on it with the shutter open for a second or two, then recompose and refocus the bat and shoot again. Exposure: Exposure is controlled by ISO. The higher the ISO number, the lighter your photos will be. For bat photography, I would keep the ISO at 200 or below.

Used to photograph bats years back with a 35mm 'superzoom compact' (Samsung); the trick was to watch the bat's flights, for some reason they used to fly a figure of eight doing the crossover above our garage - so was relatively easy to predict and trip the shutter.

Lighting. In theory, the simplest way to photograph bats in flight is to illuminate them solely using flash, whilst the shutter is held open on a long exposure. To achieve this, I operated the camera in continuous shooting mode, with shutter speeds of between 20 and 60 seconds (depending on how many bats I was expecting).
