    Photography, as we know it today, began in the late 1830s in France. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce used a portable camera obscura to expose a pewter plate coated with bitumen to light. This is the first recorded image that did not fade quickly. Niépce's success led to a number of other experiments and photography progressed very rapidly.

    Photography has been around for almost 2 centuries. Camera Obscura for much, much longer. Da Vinci used one. Please Log in or Create an account to join the conversation. The camera obscura reminds me somewhat of older cameras where the image you see is upside down - an interesting way to capture an image.

    Photography was a WORKING occupation before the Civil War (1861) The war gave rise to hundreds of roving photographers doing independent chronicles. The birth of the 'half tone' was also in that era. (the 'dare' here, is to find out what a half tone is) There's a complete education here, if you want to follow the birth of a technology.
