An example of how ISO affects the brightness of an image straight out of the camera. While a higher ISO will produce a brighter image out of the camera by amplifying the sensor’s signal, photographs taken in low light situations (like astrophotography) using a high ISO setting will appear to have more noise in a single exposure.

When I advise someone to shoot at ISO 1600 or 3200 for astrophotography, that’s really just a zero-order approximation. This month, we're going to take that up a notch with just a little bit of data you can gather for yourself. Recall from past blogs that changing the ISO does not really make your sensor more sensitive. Depending on your camera design, it might be sensor …

You are already using the 6D, which is a very good camera for astrophotography thanks to it's large pixels and great high ISO performance. From a pure SNR standpoint (based on sensorgen.info data), the 1D X at ISO 3200 supports ~3x the saturation per pixel, the 6D at ISO 3200 supports ~2x the saturation per pixel, as any one of Canon's 18mp APS-C sensors.
