What is Aperture? Understanding Aperture in Photography

    https://photographylife.com/what-is-aperture-in-photography
Aperture can be defined as the opening in a lens through which light passes to enter the camera. It is expressed in f-numbers like f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8 and so on to express the size of the lens opening, which can be controlled through the lens or the camera. Our full article on aperture with many examples and illustrations starts here.

Aperture is measured in terms of f-stops, also known as f-numbers. Like this: f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/22, etc. As shown in the diagram below, the smaller the f-number, the larger the aperture hole: As the f-number increases, the aperture size decreases. Now, each full stop corresponds to a halving of aperture size.

The f-stop number, or f-number, is the setting that controls the size of the aperture and therefore how much light can pass through the camera lens. F-numbers are determined by the ratio of the diameter of the aperture to the focal length of a lens. A small aperture has a higher f-stop, whereas a large aperture has a small f-stop number.

Aperture in full moon photography In some cases, when there’s a full moon illuminating the landscape, you can close down your aperture to higher F-values like f/5.6 – f/8. That way, you’ll have more depth of field and a sharper image.

So for each stop of aperture, say from f/2.8 to f/4, it’s multiplied by 1.41 (1.41*2.8=3.95). The diameter of an aperture is equal to the focal length, divided by the f-number. So a 50mm lens with an aperture of f/1.4 would have an aperture diameter of (50/1.40) = 35.71 millimetres.
