Atget worked the streets of Paris beginning in the 1890s and continued into the 1920s. He was really the one to establish the street as a meaningful location for photography. Interestingly, his photography mainly consisted of non-human subjects. So there you go, the father of street photography made street photographs without people.

    1. Andre Kertesz. I’d recommend first starting to learn about Andre Kertesz, who was one of the first photographers who inspired Henri Cartier-Bresson (essentially the “godfather” of street photography). Andre Kertesz harnessed the classic form of geometry to photography, and was prolific all the way until his death.

The Father of Street Photography. It is generally accepted that Eugene Atget, while certainly not the first “street photographer” (to be fair, the title wasn’t very popular at the time especially for street photographers themselves), is the one who laid the foundations to the great monument that we’ll later come to know as street photography.

The History of Street Photography - ERIC KIM

If we look at the history of street photography, there has been tons of street photography done on the homeless. We see photographs of the homeless by Henri Cartier-Bresson, by Walker Evans, and many others. Ironically enough when Henri Cartier-Bresson was interviewed about the issue, he said he would never photograph anyone “in distress…

The Evolution of Street Photography - Photo Aspects

Cartier-Bresson was a pioneer of street photography. His goal in capturing “the decisive moment” guided all his work and is still regarded as a key technique used today in street photography. He believed that there is a split second when the perfect photo opportunity arises, and if it is missed, then that photo is gone.

A History of Famous Street Photographers - New York …

Garry Winogrand: The godfather of classic New York street photography, the restless and energetic Winogrand obsessively captured daily life in both the city and around America from the ’50s to the early ‘80s. His body of work defined the post-World War II era America, filled with opulence and power, but mixed with a deep underlying anxiety.
