    With eyepiece projection (NV lens removed) your effective f# is the raw distance from scope/eyep pupil to GaAs photocathode sensor, divided by the diam of that pupil. And that is where one generally gets into trouble, because that will either be too slow or in so close that imagery stinks. Simple as that. The afocal is likely to work the best.
