    Photograph/Étienne-Jules Marey Towards the end of his life, he focused on abstract forms, one of them being smoke trails. To document this, he built a machine that produced 58 separate smoke trails. A chronographic camera was placed in front of a box and was closed by a transparent glass sheet.
